On the other hand, some state quarters, especially ones that are mint-condition, have a low mintage, or have mistakes in the minting process, can be worth a lot of money.

1. 1999-P Experimental Delaware State Quarter
At the US Mint in 1999 and 2000, they made state quarters out of different metals as a test to see which one would work best for the 2000 Sacagawea dollar.
For example, in 1999, quarters from five states took part in the project. Delaware, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Georgia are some of these.
These trial alloy quarters from 1999 were only made in small numbers by the Mint. Because of this, they are very rare and therefore very valuable.
Because it was made in Philadelphia, the 1999 P Delaware State Quarter is one of the most valuable state quarters in the Sacagawea experimental alloy line. A graded MS66 copy of this coin sold for an all-time high of $4,888 at auction.
2. 2003 D Maine State Quarter
The Maine State Quarter came out on June 2, 2023, from the U.S. Mint. This was the 23rd state quarter, and it was made at the Denver mint.
It’s easy to find Maine quarters that have been used, but it’s very rare to find one that is still mint. For example, examples graded MS67 or better are very hard to find, and you’d be lucky to find one.
In 2017, a 2003 D Maine state quarter rated MS68 was sold at Heritage Auctions for $2,300.
3. 2000 P South Carolina State Quarter
The eighth State Quarter Program coin came out in 2000. It was the South Carolina P state quarter.
This quarter is hard to find and worth the most when it is still mint. You would have to look through mint sets, original coin bags, and new bankrolls for a while to find the few examples that are rated MS68 or higher.
A small number of South Carolina P state quarters have been graded and certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service. Of these, only a few have been rated MS69. In 2018, an MS69 example of this kind was found and was valued at $8,000.

4. 2004 D Wisconsin State Quarter: Extra Leaf Low
Because the Statehood Quarters Program only made a few different kinds of coins, any mistakes made during this program are very valuable.
The 2004 Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters are one of the few types. There is an extra maize husk on the left side of both the Low Leaf and High Leaf types. One hangs low and the other is a little higher.
There is an error because regular Wisconsin state quarters don’t have this extra husk. This extra husk is a big thing.
There is no doubt that the Wisconsin extra leaf quarters are the most important minting mistakes in the history of all state quarters.
In 2020, a low-grade 2004 D Wisconsin state quarter extra leaf with the grade MS67 sold at auction for a record-breaking $6,000.
5. 1999 P Connecticut State Quarter
The 1999 P Connecticut state quarter was one of the planchets that were used to test the Sacagawea dollar. People think these coins are mistakes, and it’s very hard to get them because the Mint only made a few dozen of them.
You can tell the difference between a normal Connecticut state quarter and one that was struck on a Sacagawea planchet by a few things.
A mistake on a Connecticut state quarter is much heavier and thicker than a normal 25-cent coin. You’ll also notice that the error quarter is a gold color while the normal quarter is green.
The edge is the other thing to look at. The edge of a normal Connecticut quarter has vertical lines that make it look rough, but the edge of the mistake coin is smooth.
An MS69 1999 P Connecticut state quarter was sold for a huge $10,500 in 2018, according to a report from PCGS.
6. 1999 P Delaware State Quarter
The first coin made under the Statehood Quarter Program was the 1999 P Delaware state quarter. This is because Delaware was the first state to join the Union.
Because Delaware is an important part of American history, the Delaware Quarter is very popular with collectors who want to finish their collection of state quarters.
As you might have guessed, a lot of these coins were saved when they were first made. It can be hard to find this coin in mint condition because most fans want to keep the first Delaware state quarters.
This quarter is very valuable because mint state examples are hard to find. In 2008, a sale sold an MS66 example for $4,888.
7. 1999 P Pennsylvania MS 67 Struck on an Experimental Planchet
In 1999, Pennsylvania was one of five states that had a quarter struck on a Sacagawea planchet. This was done as an experiment to find the best metal mix for the new coin that was going to be made.
Due to the small number of trial quarters that were made, they are rare and hard to find. On the other hand, this makes them very expensive.
The Numismatic Guaranty Company says that a coin from 1999 that was struck on an experimental planchet and rated MS67 is worth up to $2,520.
8. 2006 D North Dakota State Quarter
It was the 39th coin in the line of Statehood Quarters when it came out on August 28, 2006. It is the North Dakota state quarter.
More or less, these coins are worth their face value if they have been used. Used coins are pretty common in everyday change.
The North Dakota quarter is very rare in better than mint state samples. Some can be found at grades MS60 and up, but the number gets smaller as the grade goes up. After MS67, there aren’t many models to choose from.
In 2017, a rare NDS quarter from 2006 that was rated MS68 was sold at auction for $3,760.
9. 2004 P Texas State Quarter
On June 1, 2004, the 28th quarter in the series came out. It was the 2004 P Texas State Quarter. The 2004 P Texas Grease Strike Through Error is a type of this coin that makes it one of the most expensive state quarters.
This mistake happens when grease gets stuck in the die’s grooves and covers up some pictures when the coin is struck.
It is rare to find a 2004 P Texas state quarter with a grease marks on it. This one was rated MS69 and sold for $10,000. An MS69 or higher Texas quarter is worth about $3,055, even if it doesn’t have any flaws.
10. 2008 D New Mexico State Quarter
There were 244,400,000 New Mexico quarters made by the Mint in 2004 in Philadelphia and Denver.
The Denver quarters were better struck than the Philadelphia quarters because they had more features and a nicer finish. This made the Denver coins more valuable in mint state.
Still, it’s hard to find 2008 D New Mexico state quarters that are still mint. At MS67, the number drops even more; anything higher than that is very uncommon.
